Since we're all unemployed (and enjoying it thankyouverymuch), it's always good to find an activity which costs very little. One of the great things to do in San Francisco is go crabbing. You don't need a license, bait is pretty cheap, there are crabs a-plenty in the bay, and it's fun to annoy people by constantly shouting "We have crabs! We have crabs!"

Here are some rules and tips for ya:

  1. SF Bay is a breeding area for the Dungeness crab so no matter what size of Dungeness you catch you must throw them back. All other crabs must be at least 4" across the widest part of their shell to keep.

  2. Be sure to bring lots of warm clothes! You might be too warm to wear your jacket and ski hat when you first arrive, but the cold comes in suddenly and you'll be freezing yer butt off if you don't plan ahead.

  3. Bring a radio, some cards and other stuff to do cos you've got to wait 20 minutes before pulling up your trap and if you don't have anything to do you'll be tempted to pull up your traps early, which is a no-no.

  4. Some other stuff to bring: bait for your traps (large pieces of raw chicken are best), a bucket to fill with saltwater (and crabs you've caught), some lawnchairs to sit on, a blanket for the dork who forgot their jacket or insisted "I don't get cold", a camera, snacks & beer.
