Old Faithful Inn
Built during the frigid winter of 1903-1904, the Old Faithful Inn has survived the 1959 Yellowstone
earthquake and the inferno that burned most of the park in 1988. It's absolutely breathtaking inside (and out)
and I would've loved to stay here, but even basic rooms are out of my budget. So I make do wandering around for the
day. Spent a few hours chatting with a bartender in one of the Old Faithful's bars. He's a migrant worker - but not
the kind who pick veggies. He's a nature bum -- follows the seasons. Summers he spends working at Yellowstone and in
winter he works at ski resorts. Nice life if you can afford it!
The last two images are postcards of the Old Faithful Inn in 1909 and during the 1950s.
Old Faithful
I'd been to California's Old Faithful up by Napa, but this was much more impressive. Its size, for one thing, is huge
and the crowds are just as huge. Idiots who didn't care that I was videotaping would walk right in front of the camera.
Thankfully Old Faithful's eruptions occur every 76 minutes and last anywhere from 1-5 minutes so if you've got to re-film or take
another photo cos of some jerkstore then you can.
Right after I finished watching it erupt, I heard a commotion in the parking lot so went to check it out. Turns
out there was an enormous bison wandering around by himself. People were, predictably, ignoring the posted warnings
about wild animals and running up to get its photo. Me having 1/2 a brain (at least) made a beeline for the gift shop
and made a very wide berth around the bison.
The two images on the right are postcards I picked up from ebay (the first is current while the last is from the 1950s).
