Ahhh, I knew that I'd want to stick around the hotel as long as possible since this will be the only time on my vacation I'll
be staying at an actual hotel so I didn't schedule today's activities to begin til around 11am or so. Throwing a load of laundry
in the washers near my room, I head to the lobby and load up at the free breakfast buffet, take my third shower since arriving
and wallow around for a couple more hours watching "Urban Cowboy" for the second time.
Although some say the church and cabin are located in Oregon City (including Yahoo Maps), I guess technically they're located in the little hamlet of
Carver. Although I don't recall even seeing a street light in Carver, just a carryout along the highway.
The Pioneer Church
Built in 1895 by German immigrants, this German Methodist Church saw a sharp drop in attendance during WW1 and the congregation
finally disbanded in the 1920s. In 1970, the building was brought back to its original glory and it is again being used as a
church and hosting small weddings.
Baker Cabin
When Horace Baker brought his wife Jane out to the sticks, I'm quite sure she expected him to build her a home. Wrong. He chose their
spot b/c of the nearby salt quarry and spent all his waking hours there while leaving her to sit in the wagon and freeze. Ten years later,
neighbors felt sorry enough for her that they built this cabin for her in 1856. And because life just sucks sometimes, none of the neighbors are credited
for doing this kind deed. Instead, lazy Horace Baker gets the cabin named after him for all eternity.
FYI, Baker Cabin is one of the oldest log structures in the state and the only known log cabin
with a cantilever supported loft and exterior stairway built in Oregon during the covered wagon era. I didn't know what cantilever meant
so I looked it up:
cantilever: a projecting beam or member supported at only one end
