You take an elevator down 200 feet to the cave. It's pretty impressive, kinda like the cave where the pirate ship was hidden away in the film The Goonies. In the winter, I'm told, the cave is full of sea lions keeping warm. However, in the summer, they prefer to sleep on the rocks out in the sun.

Looking in the cave, I only see one bull and one cow and they're both sleeping. Every now and then one of them will lift its head up and take a look around, but that's about it. I wander to the other side of the cave where there's a spot to view birds which nest on the cliffs. A picture shows the old stairwell that brought tourists down before the elevator was installed. Whew, I don't even wanna think about hiking up a 200 foot stairwell!

Here are some photos and photo postcards from the 1940s and 1950s. The third photo shows the stairwell which took you to the cave before the elevator was installed.

The last photo is a plate I bought when I got back home from ebay for five bucks. It is cooler than any of the other chotchkes that were being sold in the giftshop -- wood burls, toothpick holders, coffee mugs, t-shirts, etc.
