Harney County Museum in Burns, Oregon
The little town of Burns is on today's itinerary for one reason only -- it houses one of the world's largest balls of twine. I understand that recently Kansas asserts they have the largest ball of twine in existence so rather than quibble over skeins of yarn, let's just say it's one of THE largest in the world.
The museum, which has you sign their guestbook and deposit $4.00 into a little safebox, is great.
I'd originally intended to only spend about an hour there, but ended up wandering around for three hours in the many rooms.
What's great about this museum is that they've got so much detail about the item. Some museums have an item with a placard saying something like: "Native American bowl, 1860s". This place would have the bowl's entire history "...was used by Col. Davis in Montana before being given to his sister Eulalia of Kansas City..." Cool!
The ball of twine was impressively sized, but I'd recommend visiting the museum for all the other stuff as well.
