Shooting Star Saloon in Huntsville, Utah
Who can resist driving an extra 185 miles to see the world's largest stuffed dog head? I sure couldn't and
found myself visiting the Shooting Star Saloon in beautiful Huntsville, Utah.
Entering the bar, I was surprised to see that it was empty save for the bartender and her friend. But
it turned out to be a good thing cos I was able to photograph the entire place, which is jammed full of
great odds 'n' ends. Crumpled dollar bills coat the ceiling, a jukebox sits on the side with choices by
Elvis, Hank Williams, Etta Fitzgerald,
George Jones, Harry Connick Jr., etc. Mounted elk and moose abound with a pool table in the back. Words
can't describe it, you'll just have to see the photos.
And on the right wall, is the piece de resistance... Buck himself. At first glance, you might
think this is a bear and although I've seen some pretty big dogs in my life this dog was HUGE! Makes the
dog they used in "Cujo" look dinky.
The best part about the place? First, Utah is a state that has kept its nose out of the bars and you're welcome to have a smoke while you're sipping your cold, frosty beer. And second, after a couple cigarettes and a couple beers, I was ready to be on my way. I asked the bartender how much I owed her.
"Three bucks," she replied.
"Oh no," I said. "I had two beers, remember? Not just one."
"I know," she said. "Two beers at a buck fifty each."
A dollar fifty for a beer?! And it's not even Happy Hour. I love this place! I left her five bucks and
promised myself that I'd be back someday.
