Fruita Colorado, Home of Mike the Headless Chicken
Fruita, I was sure, was going to be nirvana. How can a town which celebrates a headless chicken not be The Coolest Place in Colorado?
Unfortunately, other than an ass-ugly rusting metal statue and the festival held each May, there's not much else to see. No theme diner, no tacky statue where you can insert your head for a photo op, nothing, nada, zilch. Very disappointing.
Although Fruita doesn't seem to care that Mike is their mealticket, I think it's a great story so click here if you'd like to read about him.
Dinosaur Journey in Fruita, Colorado
Although this place looks pretty cool, I was running a bit late because of the time I wasted wandering around downtown Fruita looking for the headless chicken crap, and they were closing in about an hour so I just took a couple photos from outside and kept heading to New Castle.
Below are some scenic photos I took while driving from Fruita to New Castle (Colorado). The reason there's a photo of cows is because I passed several signs warning me that the entire area was open for public grazing - which means your cows can roam freely throughout the area. No fences. So they can wander anywhere - even the middle of the road if they want.
