The train ride takes us up through the redwood groves, up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest.

Until 1976, the mountain train ran over an elaborate trestle system. The soaring trestle burned in an arson fire during the drought of 1976. This creaky-looking contraption is what's left of it.

I hear a weird creaking so I photograph the axle... this is called foreshadowing

Carumba! We're stranded for 30 minutes while they fix the broken axle. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but several Yuppie parents were mortified that they had to *gasp* take their kids into the woods to pee while we waited.

The axle gets fixed and we're on our way again.
