Jumping at the chance to do something I'd been seriously considering doing for more than a year, I contacted
the Oakland Zoo to join their Apprenticeship program. After working with Sun Bears, an Ocelot, flamingos, Sika
Deer and Siamangs (apes) for a couple months, I moved down to the Children's Zoo. I wasn't so sure I'd like
it down there, but *wow* I love it! Just goes to show ya, never assume anything. The two keepers,
Victor & Adam, are both really cool & nice and I've learned a lot from them.
Every time I see you jerks, y'all ask me about the zoo. It's hard to get a true picture of what it's like, though, so I've been taking photos throughout so you can see for yourself what Franklin's been up to all these months. And as many of you have mentioned, I have had a "bubble of happy" around me since I started working there. Why I thought I wanted to babysit celebrities in NYC doing PR work, I'll never know. I've always loved being around animals (Jablow not included) and should've headed for this career years ago. However, there's no sense crying over spilt milk and I've got my whole life ahead of me so never be afraid to do something new. Hell, I up and moved out to California after getting the internet bug. And yes, that was me who packed two suitcases & my cat and went to NYC with nothing but a dream to dance. Er, um, OK, maybe that was the girl from Flashdance or whatever... but the point is, I went and I wasn't afraid to do something entirely new. Anyhoo, y'all know I like to talk about my favorite person (me! heheh) but I know y'all want to see some photos so I'll shuddup now. Well, almost. Below is a photo of OJ, the largest tortoise at the zoo. He really likes getting scratched. The second photo shows his little present for me. That's the one thing you'd better be prepared for if you wanna be a zookeeper -- lotsa poop! Alright already! Here are the pix. Click here to begin your tour!
