String 1 is also known as The Veldt, the exhibit which includes a large mix of animals including giraffes, elands, gazelle, vultures, cranes, pea hens, ducks and geese. The giraffes, elands and gazelles are not allowed to roam the exhibit at night so first thing in the morning we head out to the exhibit to rake up old alfalfa, soiled strawbeds and poo. Then we'll hang new alfalfa in the feeders, lay out new straw and feed the ducks and geese.
8:00am... The Veldt awaits me.
Jeff, one of the Griffon Vultures, watches over the plastic egg he thinks he's laid.
One of the vultures' enrichments: a Godfather-like horse head to pick at.
Akbar, the other male vulture, partakes of some breakfast.
Using Mr. Sunshine to dry out his feathers.
Their wingspan easily stretches past eight feet across.
Elands waiting to be let out of their night pens.
Two of our Dama gazelles in their night pen.
After we're done cleaning the Veldt, the animals are shifted outside.
As soon as they get outside they start searching for their breakfast.
